South Hempstead, is a small hamlet, less than 1 square mile in size, which is in close proximity to Hempstead Lake State Park and Hempstead Gardens. As of the 2000 census the population was 3,188. Commuting ease changed the face of the town as the rich and powerful flocked to the suburbs, building lavish waterfront mansions and inland equestrian properties.
